A lot of people ask us what the difference is between the Thinkpad and the Ideapad. There are a lot of differences and here is an excellent article on Quora with nice pictures and lots of good feedback too.
We feel that we, as a Lenovo warranty service center, have a unique perspective. While what they say is true about the build quality differences and purpose differences, one difference is often overlooked – Service Speed.
Ideapad laptops must be sent back to Lenovo for any warranty service. Thinkpad laptops can be serviced at a local authorized service center – like us! That means that while under warranty (up to 5 years) you can bring your laptop in for repair service and often have it back the next business day fully repaired. If there’s any special handling that needs to be done, you can directly request that with our service technicians.
If you depend heavily on your laptop or you simply can’t bear the thought of having to mail it off for weeks for a repair, then the extra cost for the Thinkpad will probably be well worth it in the long run. No reinstalling programs, contacts, auto-fill info, passwords and all the other little things that you have done to make your computer yours – just because the screen got cracked.
On the other hand, if you consider them basically disposable and everything is backed up to the cloud anyway, the Ideapad is a great way to go. This way you can upgrade to the latest interfaces and features along the way.
